Arvada Salon Owner, and Master Stylist, Hether Florman embarked on a one of a kind journey last month where she traveled to San Antonio Aguas Caliente Guatemala to work with the nonprofit organization Global Stylist Scholarship. During her time in Guatemala, Hether shared her skills as a hairstylist, business owner, and educator with local individuals developing skills to pursue a career as a hairstylist.
The comprehensive program teaches hair cutting and styling skills as well as the nuts and bolts of business ownership. The goal of the program is to empower the men and women of Guatemala to build careers and provide for themselves, their families, and their communities. The program lasts a week, but the relationships built last way beyond the time the volunteers and participants spend together. Hether has been in contact with many of the individuals she taught a month ago regularly. She has had fun keeping up with those she connected with and checking in with them to see what kind of progress they are making towards their goals. Hether, who has dedicated her career to hair, enjoyed inspiring a new subset of people to dedicate their lives to this craft.
Anyone who has talked to Hether about her experience has probably heard her say that it was life changing. In Hether’s own words, her experience was “Inspiring and beautiful. It was truly humbling to see so many people jump to participate in a program that would allow them to create a better life for themselves and their loved ones. I can honestly say it felt amazing to share my skills with others in such a unique way.” Hether hopes her participation in this program will inspire other stylists to give back and participate in programs that allow others to find a passion for hairstyling.
